Barbershop Talks: Bringing vital men’s health conversations to the community

Roper St. Francis Mobile Health launched on Friday an innovative series of events called Barbershop Talks to engage men in meaningful discussions about their health, particularly focusing on prostate cancer awareness and screening.
Recognizing that health conversations often don’t begin in clinical settings, the initiative meets men in trusted, familiar spaces—their local barbershops. The first event took place at Designer Cuts Barbering Palace in Goose Creek.
Alfred Charley, representing Praise Out Cancer, stressed the importance of early detection as the cornerstone of effective prostate cancer treatment. His motto, “Early detection saves lives,” underscores why community education is vital to reduce preventable deaths among men.
Faith leaders play a crucial role in promoting community health. Truth & Fellowship Ministry ‘s Pastor Jonathan Briggs emphasized the connection between spiritual guidance and health education in motivating men to care for their well-being: “When we come together as a community, sharing faith and knowledge, we create a support system that encourages men to prioritize their health.”
Assistant Vice President of Community Health at Roper St. Francis Healthcare Renee Linyard-Gary explained the rationale behind the initiative: “Health conversations don’t always start in a clinic. They happen at work, at home—and yes, at the barbershop.” By creating a relaxed, welcoming environment, Barbershop Talks encourages men to openly ask questions, share concerns and learn how to take charge of their health.
Berkeley County Councilman Steve Christopher Davis also spoke to the broader significance of the program for local communities. He emphasized the need for sustained awareness and advocacy, sharing, “I’m intending to put a resolution in front of County Council to have one week out the year designated Prostate Awareness Week.” His commitment underscores how local leadership can help expand the impact of initiatives like Barbershop Talks, ensuring that health education and early detection remain priorities across the community.
The inaugural event took place at Designer Cuts Barbering Palace in Goose Creek, drawing attendees eager to learn and engage. Besides informative talks, the event offered refreshments and the opportunity to register for Roper St. Francis Healthcare’s free prostate cancer screening scheduled for Sept. 6.
This series is part of Roper St. Francis Mobile Health’s ongoing efforts to build trust, reduce barriers and make preventive care more accessible across the Lowcountry. With plans to host similar Barbershop Talks across additional barbershops in the coming months, the program aims to sustain ongoing dialogue and education around men’s health.
The next two Barbershop Talks presented by Roper St. Francis Mobile Health will take place in August:
- Saturday, Aug. 16 | Confidence Thru the Art of Barbering in Moncks Corner
- Saturday, Aug. 23 | Diamond Cuts in North Charleston
