Roper St. Francis Healthcare is excited to introduce a new medical campus in North Charleston that will replace Roper Hospital in downtown Charleston. This state-of-the-art facility will bring top-quality care to families across the Lowcountry. With advanced technology, energy-saving designs and easy access from major highways, this campus is built to support patients and the community for generations to come.

The plan for expansion

The campus will include a new hospital, an outpatient building and plenty of parking. Everything has been designed to meet the needs of the growing Lowcountry population. The flexible and energy-efficient design will ensure the hospital can keep up with changes in healthcare for many years.

Progress and timeline

Planning and building a medical campus takes time and care. Here’s the timeline for the project:

Planning: March 2023 – July 2023
Design: November 2023 – April 2025
Construction: Completion by second quarter 2029

While the new campus is being built, Roper St. Francis Healthcare will continue to serve patients at its current locations.

Things to expect in the coming months

May 2025

Crews will begin installing underground electrical lines, several hundred feet of stormwater pipes and a drainage system.
They will prepare for the construction of the hospital foundations. This includes finishing the demolition of existing buildings and their old foundations.
Leveling the site includes the use of dump trucks and other heavy equipment to bring in new soil and remove old soil.
Crews have placed 14 test piles into the ground to test soil conditions and check on the necessary depth and strength of the piles. These piles are part of the overall foundation.

June 2025

Several hundred people are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony at 1 p.m. June 11 near the former Verizon building, featuring speakers, presentations and performances.
Construction of the hospital foundations will start.
